In their last three matches, all played last week, Barça Femení flooded the defences of their opponents with buckets! of goals, 19 in total, and that is something that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Real Sociedad, placed second in the league table, were delivered a first-hand, get-out-of-the-park embarrassment, with the scoreline reading 9-1 at the end of the game. Athletic Club, fortunately, had the privilege of being served only a 3-nil professional-style beating.
Having scored goals in excess of 5 in more than 50% of their games and won 30 games out of 30 played – 22 in the league, 6 in the Champions League, and the two games that handed them the Spanish Supercopa trophy – Barça Femení haven't shown a semblance of slowing down this season after winning the treble in emphatic fashion last season. In the league, they're currently top with their 'chasers' 22 points behind them. In the Champions League, they will soon be facing Real Madrid in the QFs. The fact that none of the players from this squad, including the winner of the player-of-the-year award, made the FIFPRO XI continues to baffle me.
Time to time, in football, there emerges a near-perfect assortment of players in a team that not only seems undefeatable but also changes/shifts the paradigm of the game while setting its own. In the immediate present, the brilliance of this team is blessing our eyes, but it also gives the impression that history will remember them as movers and shakers of the game, especially women's football.
